Herbal Remedies for Malaria, Ayurvedic Treatment – Causes, Symptoms

Malaria: Overview

Malaria is a mosquito-borne blood disease which can potentially be life-threatening. The serious infectious disease is caused by a group of single-celled microorganisms called parasitic protozoans, which belong to the ‘Plasmodium’ type. The transmission of Malaria from an affected individual to a healthy individual results from a mosquito bite. The disease is transmitted only when a female ‘Anopheles’ mosquito infects the body of a healthy individual with the tiny Plasmodium parasite. The parasite develops within the mosquito because of a number of factors, particularly humidity and ambient temperatures.

Malaria is commonly known by three names — tertian fever, quarter fever and the malignant tertian malaria — based on the parasite which causes the disease.

Causes of Malaria

Malaria is a communicable disease which gets transmitted to humans and animals through the saliva of a female ‘Anopheles’ mosquito.

When an infected ‘Anopheles’ mosquito bites a healthy individual, the Plasmodium parasite enters the bloodstream. The malaria parasite lays dormant within the liver of the host, without leading to any symptoms, for an average of around 10 days. However, the parasite keeps multiplying during this time, and new malaria parasites are then released back into the bloodstream. In the bloodstream, these parasites infect red blood cells and multiply further; with some parasites remaining in the liver for quite some time and causing the disease to recur.

Once an unaffected mosquito becomes infected after feeding on an infected person, the cycle of Malaria starts all over again.

Malaria parasites which can cause the infection in humans are of four types — Plasmodium vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. falciparum. The most severe forms of Malaria, which can be potentially fatal, are caused by P. falciparum.

Other than transmission through female ‘Anopheles’ mosquito bite, Malaria can also get transmitted by blood in certain cases which may include:

  • Blood transfusion
  • Organ transplant
  • Use of shared needles / syringes

Symptoms of Malaria

The symptoms of Malaria can be uncomplicated or severe, depending on how the disease has progressed in the affected individual.

Some of the common, uncomplicated symptoms of Malaria are: fever, shivering chills, excessive sweating, a sensation of cold, vomiting, nausea, headaches, and fatigue.

Besides these symptoms, some of the other indications of Malaria, generally implying increased severity of the disease, include:

  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Diarrhea
  • Anemia
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Muscle pain
  • Bloody stools
  • Convulsions

  • Respiratory distress

  • Dysfunction of some vital organ of the body
