Arrhythmia

Home  /  Heart Issues  /  Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia – a violation of frequency, rhythm and sequence of contractions of the heart. Arrhythmia is caused by changes of activities in the heart tissues or in the electrical signals that control the heartbeat, these changes may be caused by different conditions, like disease, injury, genetic, etc. Though arrhythmias are usually harmless, but some are challenging and if left untreated may lead to complication or even death.

Causes of Arrhythmia

  • Various heart conditions like cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, heart attack, hypertension, scarring of the heart tissue and problems with electrical signals in the heart
  • Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
  • Underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
  • Smoking and drug abuse
  • Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine
  • Strong emotional stress, anxiety, anger and pain
  • Certain medications, adulterated dietary supplements and herbal medicines, including over-the-counter cold and allergy drugs
  • Medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Family history and genetics
  • Imbalances in the blood, like deficiency of potassium, magnesium, calcium and other essential minerals

Symptoms of Arrhythmia

An arrhythmia may or may not cause any obvious signs or symptoms, for instance, some patients with life-threatening arrhythmias may have no symptoms while others with symptoms may not have a serious problem.

Symptoms depend on the type of arrhythmia which include:

  • shortness of breath
  • fainting, or nearly fainting
  • fluttering in the chest
  • angina (chest pain)
  • Weakness, dizziness, and light-headedness
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • palpitations
  • sweating

Sometimes arrhythmias that are unrecognized or left untreated can cause life-threatening complications affecting the heart and the brain.

  • Cardiac arrest. The heart may suddenly and unexpectedly stop beating as a result of ventricular fibrillation.
  • Cognitive impairment and dementia. Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia are more common in people who have arrhythmia. This may be due to reduced blood flow to the brain over time.
  • Heart failure. Repeat arrhythmias can lead to a rapid decline in the ability of the lower chambers to pump blood. Heart failure is especially likely to develop or to grow worse as a result of arrhythmia when you already have heart disease.
  • This can occur in some patients who have atrial fibrillation. With arrhythmia, blood can pool in the atria, causing blood clots to form. If a clot breaks off and travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke.
  • Worsening arrhythmia. Some arrhythmias trigger another type of arrhythmia or get worse over time, which may eventually leads to life-threatening complications or even death.
