What is holistic medicine?

Holistic medicine is a system of health care that encourages a cooperative relationship among all those involved (patient, family, and the physician), leading towards best achievement of physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of life.

The American Holistic Health Association, “Ancient healing traditions, as far back as over 5,000-6,000 years ago in India, stressed living a healthy way of life in harmony with nature. Socrates (4th century B.C.) warned against treating only one part of the body ‘for the part can never be well unless the whole is well’.

Holistic medicine seeks to address all systems of the body to improve health, heal disease, and maximize well-being. The holistic belief is that health has more than just a physical component and is, also related to the mental, emotional, social and spiritual state of an individual. To be healthy, all aspect of a person must be addressed, and all must be treated for there to be true health. We work in partnership with our patients. We recommend treatments that support the body’s natural healing system and consider the whole person and the whole situation.

Principles of Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine is also based on the belief that unconditional love and support is the most powerful healer and a person is ultimately responsible for his or her own health and well-being. Other principles of holistic medicine include the following:

  • All people have innate healing powers.
  • The patient is a person, not a disease.
  • Healing takes a team approach involving the patient and doctor, and addresses all aspects of a person’s life
  • Treatment involves curing the cause of the disease, not just alleviating the symptoms.

What is holistic healing?

The ultimate goal of holistic healing is wholeness. And In achieving wholeness, we must consider all aspects of our lives, and that include:

  1. Respecting our body
  2. Healing our relationships
  3. Caring for our environment
  4. Showing love for all humankind
  5. Living our life purpose

So what is holistic healing?  ‘What exactly is healing?’

Healing is about bringing any imbalance into alignment with its natural state of functioning.

Every organ in our bodies has a natural or ‘healthy’ state of functioning as do our emotional, mental and spiritual states. When we are out of balance, we feel like something is out of place – whether it comes in the form of emotional or physical pain or discomfort – and we naturally want to return to our natural state of harmony, when everything ‘works’ as intended. This process of rebalancing is synonymous with healing.

Holistic healing bypasses the approach of conventional medicine; it looks beyond a person’s physical state and sees the holistic view of their state of being or functioning. It acknowledges that the root cause of a physical illness may not be physical.

Holistic healing works when we approach life from all aspects of life, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual…

So when we heal holistically, we address imbalances in all levels, rather than one or two parts of the body, so it becomes a life-long process in achieving overall health balance. The final aim of treating the patient and not just the disease is because it promises a happier, healthier and more balanced life.

How does Holistic Healing Works?

As we go about our day, a lot of things are happening around us than we see it. Whether we are conscious of it or not, life situations cause us to respond physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually at the same time.

But western medicine views the body as being a separate functioning mechanism to the rest of our being, while the holistic healing approach sees the body as a reflection of the whole person; you see the different? So we go from being ‘me and my body’ (which is 2 separate entities) to ‘I am my body’ (which is 1 entity). There is no separation at all.

In order to understand how holistic healing works, we must realise that there are many physical and non-physical factors that contribute to our overall health. Take a look at these life factors that influence our health and aging. Increase or decrease our health.
